Cassis
East of Marseille, Cassis is one of the best-kept secrets in France. Famous for its limestone cliffs and calanques (sheltered inlets), Cassis makes for an ideal summer getaway. The tiny port city is also known for its pretty architecture and rose wine.
Cassis is a Mediterranean fishing port in southern France. Overlooked by a centuries-old château, it’s known for pebbly beaches and its calanques, narrow inlets framed by steep, limestone cliffs. The harbor features pastel-colored buildings, sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Local vineyards are known for producing Cassis white wine. Trails run along the huge, rocky Cap Canaille headland for panoramic sea views.
Cassis is a great place to visit for a day - see the calanques and have lunch by the harbor but it is very sleepy so probably OK for a night. I would not expect a "typical French old town" in this touristy part of the world.

It is a popular tourist destination, famous for its cliffs (falaises) and the sheltered inlets called calanques. The wines of Cassis are white and rosé, and not to be confused with crème de cassis, a specialty of Burgundy which takes its name from blackcurrants (cassis), not the commune.
