Riquewihr is one of the most beautiful Alsace villages, if not the most beautiful! One of the best medieval towns in France, nestled between mountains and vineyards is one of the best places to visit in Alsace, well-known for its picturesque architecture, and wines.

Once you’ve seen the Alsatian hubs of Strasbourg and Colmar, head to Riquewihr, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. This town on the Alsatian Wine Route is known for half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and exceptional Riesling, bien sûr.

The villages of Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé are said to be the inspiration behind the town from Beauty and the Beast. Standing at the bus terminal in Colmar, it was time to determine which little town we would be visiting while in Alsace.

Riquewihr is first mentioned in 1094. The village was then a property of the Counts of Horbourg who built the first fortified enclosure in 1291. Riquewihr obtained town status in 1320. Its golden age dates back to the 16th century, during which it grew very rich thanks to the vineyard.

For the best experience, plan to spend at least 3 days on the Alsace wine route. This gives you enough time to day trip to the towns, dine on the Alsatian food, go on wine tastings, and truly experience this region. During our visit, we typically visited four towns per day.

There is no direct connection from Colmar to Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg. However, you can take the train to Sélestat, take the walk to Gare, take the line 500 bus to Château Haut-Koenigsbourg, then take the walk to Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg. Alternatively, you can take the taxi to Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg.
