What Is Naqshe Rostam ?

Naghsh-e Rostam is an ancient site that includes a huge boulder with historical monuments from the three historical periods of Elamites, Achaemenids and Sassanids. Archaeological excavations at Naghsh-e Rostam Rock provide considerable information about these three historical periods of ancient Iran and ancient Iranian civilization.

Prominent historical attractions in Naghsh-e Rostam include historical tombs, ancient inscriptions and lithographs, and ancient Iranian paintings. One of the most prominent reasons for the fame of this region is the location of the tombs of Achaemenid kings.

Naqsh-e Rostam was first excavated by a German archaeologist in 1302 AH, during which remains of Sassanid towers and castles were discovered. Thirteen years after this date, three years later, the inscriptions and lithographs of Naghsh-e Rostam were also found among the rocks and stones. A reservoir on the western side of Naqsh-e Rostam and the remains of other palaces and buildings were discovered during subsequent excavations, respectively.
