Azadi Square (which was called Shahyad Square before the Islamic Revolution) is the largest square in Tehran, which is located in its western part. This square along with Azadi Tower was designed and built in 1349 to commemorate the 2500-year celebrations of the Iranian Empire and by the order of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the then Shah of Iran, and by Hossein Amanat, and after the Islamic Revolution in 1357, it was named "Freedom Square".
