International recognition
Turkey is the only country which recognises Northern Cyprus. Turkey has an embassy in North Nicosia, and Northern Cyprus has an embassy in Ankara. In 2005, Yahya Jammeh, then President of the Gambia, said that his country was ready to recognise the independence of Northern Cyprus.
