Most Lao understand and speak Thai. Lao has many borrowings from Pali and Sanskrit, particularly in its literary forms. Among the minorities, there is the Miao-Yao (Hmong-Iu Mien) language group, mostly spoken in the north. Among the Hmong, Chinese characters are used in religious rituals.
