What are the safety risks of finding penpals?

Hello. I’m wondering what are some risks upon penpalling from one another & the precautions that need to be taken to be sure that the penpal is the exact age & the real thing…this is for an article for Santa Fe New Mexican Newspaper section, Generation Next & I would like to know…

There’ are plenty of risks. I write to penpals through the mail by choice and I love it. I started when I was twenty though and I was very choosy about who I would write to. If you have a gut feeling about someone, don’t write to them. If you want to be safe and do it by post and not email, get a P.O. Box and do not give out your last name until you feel comfortable. If it was for a child and you want to allow them to write, then do what I just said and make sure to read over your child’s letters and make sure the person they are writing to is being appropriate. My sister is 11 and wants penpals, I know I could find her some, but I doubt my mom would let her do it because you can’t trust people over the internet. Good luck.

If you want internet websites, I can totally help you there.

I used to have penpals online years ago… I am now 21 and am not really into chatting or that sort of stuff anymore since I met my awesome fiance. I do, however e-mail all the time to workers, friends I know in person, etc.. I would like a “penpal” such as someone who I can talk to about my career, or just to talk to about anything…that would be cool like good old days.even tho I dont know the person lol. I like support from family and friends so they’re cool. Find one in a mature chat room. What if they say their a girl but they are a guy, I just dont trust ppl anymore… be careful with photos and stuff. Talking and stuff is fine though about general stuff.

you never really know who you’re talking to. find one from a trusted source, i believe they have companies where you can find a penpal. you could google it or something.
