Where can I get a safe penpal?
I want a penpal but I’ve never trusted the internet or anything. I’m from America, and I’m a 17 year old girl. I see ads everywhere when I search saying 17 year old from Australia girl blah blah blah, but I don’t know these sites or if this is a 17 year old girl or a 45 year old man or if I make a request for a penpal and some 60 year old man on the other end of the computer sends me a pic of his granddaughter or something and says it’s him. Where can I find someone safe to communicate with.
Maybe you could talk to your school teachers about it. Or if you have religious faith, some of the officials at your church. Or through a pastime like girlguides. They might have connections or know of legitimate organizations that have penpal opportunities. I think you are wise to be cautious. If you do something like that, the people at the other end will know that you are legitimate too. Good luck.
You’re right, it is hard to know who’s who on the internet. If you have a hobby, perhaps there’s a Facebook group you could join, then once you’ve spent a bit of time there you’ll come across someone. Naturally, don’t give away any personal information until a proper friendship is established. Maybe a couple of Skype calls could help you ascertain someone’s bona fides.
