How to know whether my penpal is a fake person?

right, i have a penpal who i met on this website which is specifically designed for making friends all over the world, its very secure and you can control who talks to you and stuff.
but i just want to know how to make sure?
my pen pal lives in brazil, so hes kind of poor and not as well off as i am, so he doesnt own a computer, he goes on at school.
we write to eachother often and also email if he cant afford to post a letter.
but he seems real because he has a lot of pictures of him and he has photos of him as a child. which he put on the penpal website.
so im confident he is who he says he is.
but how can i be certain?

thanks!

Update: Erinny,
he uses his school computer, and i never really asked him about photos.

Lollipop lady is the English word for crossing guard, because of the stop sign she holds – looks like a lollipop. Bobby is slang for policeman but it’s kind of an old man phrase, I’ve never heard anyone my age (20) use it. There’s loads of Asian people in England, I’d say a third of my class at school was. Plus, most people from other countries tend to speak with an American accent (it seems to be the most common in international schools) so it would be odd for her to have an English one. Oh and the spelling, very different in England, generally we use ‘s’ instead of ‘z’ like ‘analyse’ and we add a ‘u’ like ‘colour’.

There are sites that list scams, scammers, the photos scammers use, names, email addresses and the emails themselves. You can look up your penpal at those sites and see if what you have matches any known scammer profiles.

Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don’t bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn’t worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

If you google the word “scambaiting”, you will find sites where you can read scambaits, post up the emails and email addresses of scammers, post up a fake website, read up on how to alert a hosting company that they are hosting a fake website, ask questions and learn all about the hobby of scambaiting.
