People usually use a penpal relationship to practice their reading skills and writing in a foreign languages , to improve literacy , or to learn more about other new countries and different life-styles , and to make friendships.
Like any other friendships in life, some people will remain penpals for only a short period of time, while others may continue to exchange letters and presents for long times . And some other penpals may eventually arrange to meet each other face to face and in some cases penpal friendship may lead people to serious relationships , or even marriage.
Penpals come in all ages, nationalities, cultures, languages and interests. Pals may seek new penfriends based on their own age group, a specific occupation, hobbies , or select someone totally different from them to gain knowledge about the world around them.
