About this photo

Roofless and covered in ferns, though it has been in ruins for more than 150 years. The original structure was a simple chapel built in 1521, by a Portuguese "fidalgo" or nobleman, Duarte Coelho, as an act of gratitude following his escape from a storm in the South China Sea. Leaning on the walls are the intricately engraved tombstones belong to Dutch nobility that were buried here.
